Red Devils former player Gary Neville described the players' apology after the missed penalties as "embarrassing".
Neville spoke about Bruno Fernandes' post on social media following his missed penalty against Aston Villa. The English former player thinks players should not apologize to fans for missing a penalty.
Fernandes took the ball to score his 23rd penalty for Manchester United in the final minutes of Aston Villa's game at Old Trafford on Saturday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team was defeated 1-0 after the Portuguese star failed to turn the penalty into a goal.
The Portuguese midfielder had failed to evaluate just one of his previous 22 penalty shootouts. Fernandes, who could not even find the goal in the penalty kick he used in the last minutes of the Aston Villa match, caused Manchester United to leave the field without points.
The star player shared with his followers that he made a mistake by expressing that Manchester United cost him one point in a statement on social media after the match.
Fernandes wrote on his Instagram account:
"No one is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and resulting defeat.
“I have always taken on my responsibilities and suppressed my troubles in difficult moments. Today, I took a step forward and faced my ambitions and responsibilities like many other challenges.
"I was unsuccessful today, even though I hit the ball just like I used to put the ball in the net.
"Today, I once again take on the responsibility that has been given to me since the first day I joined Manchester United. I will take that responsibility again without any fear whenever it is given to me."
"The most important thing for me is to win together. I want to help my teammates and my club do their best and I will always act that way."
"Thank you for all your support after the final whistle! "It was very emotional to hear you say my name in the stadium. I will come back stronger for myself because there are certain standards I set for myself.
"Most of all, I need to come back in a better way for my teammates and the fans who have always supported us."
Neville later tweeted:
"The culture of apology that devours football would be okay if it came from a real place. But often it's just a smokescreen and a distraction tactic designed by experts to mask the hideous performances of football players! "Losing a match = communicators coming together to see how we can turn the crisis to our advantage."
