Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he feels very bad after apologizing to fans for the performance after Manchester United's 4-1 loss to Watford on Saturday.
United were trailing 2-0 at halftime at Vicarage Road. He hoped to turn the match with a goal from Donny van de Beek's foot.
However, that spark disappeared after Harry Maguire was shown a red card for a second yellow card, and the home team won the game differently, scoring two more goals in the final moments of the match.
Speaking to the BBC's Match of the Day program after the match, the United manager said:
"The first half was the worst we've played and it's hard for me to explain why we played like that and let them come into our box from scratch.
"I am very hurt. When you play in the Premier League, you have to go up against good players and good opponents like that.
"The guys are in a terrible place in their minds right now. We disappointed ourselves and the fans. It's hard to just stand here and explain but this is football and we have to take our chances.
“I will take the responsibility. The players are working as hard as they can.
"The fans are really disappointed. I get it, we all get it. They supported us despite everything, they've been with us throughout this restructuring.
"After finishing last seasons in third and second place, expectations change as we sign the best players.
"They are right to speak their minds, I am not surprised after a day like this because we were way below what we could and should have done in the first half.
"I feel like the fans. We are ashamed to lose like this. We are in a very bad situation but it is part of football.
When asked if he was worried about his future at the club, Solskjaer commented:
"Losing my job is nothing to worry about. professional players but we are not getting results right now.
"I feel so bad."
